9/3/2010 Ilya Kovalchuk, LW The NHL has signed off on Ilya Kovalchuk's latest contract with the New Jersey Devils.

Analysis: Five weeks after rejecting the Russian's landmark 17-year, $102 million contract with the Devils, the league approved a revised 15-year, $100 million deal on Friday after reaching an agreement with the NHL Players Association on an amendment covering long-term contracts. The NHL had rejected the Devils' initial offer because it violated the league's salary cap. An arbiter upheld that decision after the NHL Players Association filed a grievance.
9/3/2010 Mike Comrie, LW The Penguins have signed Comrie to a $500,000, one-year contract, giving them a proven scorer who might be capable of playing on one of their top three lines.

Analysis: Comrie has scored 20 or more goals five times during nine NHL seasons with Edmonton, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Ottawa and the New York Islanders. He has not scored more than 13 goals since 2007-08. Comrie will join the Penguins several months after marrying actress Hilary Duff.
9/2/2010 Chris Stewart, RW The Colorado Avalanche remain committed to their youth movement, signing Stewart to a two-year deal.

Analysis: The 22-year-old Stewart led the team with 28 goals last season and finished with 64 points.
9/2/2010 Jordan Staal, C Staal is expected to miss the start of training camp as he recovers from an infection to his right foot, which was severely injured during the NHL playoffs.

Analysis: Staal's offseason preparation has been hampered by the infection, which developed after he twice had surgery to repair a lacerated tendon. Staal was injured during a second-round game against Montreal on April 30, but returned after missing only two games. After Staal was hurt, the Penguins expected him to be out for weeks. Penguins general manager Ray Shero believes Staal will be ready for the Oct. 7 opener against Philadelphia.

9/2/2010 Antti Niemi, G The Sharks have signed the goalie who helped knock them out of the playoffs, agreeing to a one-year, $2 million deal with Antti Niemi.

Analysis: Niemi stopped 129 of 136 shots in the Western Conference final to help Chicago sweep the Sharks. The Blackhawks went on to win the Stanley Cup behind Niemi but cut ties with the goalie because of salary cap concerns. The 27-year-old Niemi played all but one period of the Blackhawks postseason run, going 16-6 with a 2.63 goals-against average, .910 save percentage and two shutouts.
9/1/2010 Ilya Kovalchuk, LW The NHL has extended its deadline to Friday for approving Ilya Kovalchuk's $100 million, 15-year contract with the New Jersey Devils.

Analysis: The NHL has already rejected a front-loaded, 17-year deal valued at $102 million because the structure of the deal would have circumvented the league's salary cap. An independent arbitrator upheld that decision. The Devils and Kovalchuk submitted the new contract to the league last Friday.
8/31/2010 Nikolai Khabibulin, G Khabibulin has been sentenced to 30 days in jail stemming from his Arizona drunken-driving conviction. The four-time All-Star received the sentence Tuesday in Scottsdale City Court. He also was fined $5,100 and must enroll in an alcohol-treatment program. He

Analysis: Khabibulin was ordered to report to jail Saturday, but that could be delayed because he's appealing his sentence. Khabibulin, who played for Phoenix from 1996-99, still has a home in Paradise Valley. He was pulled over Feb. 8, after the car was clocked at 70 mph in a 45 mph zone. Khabibulin signed a four-year, $15 million deal with Edmonton last year.
8/31/2010 Doug Weight, C The Islanders have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with team captain Doug Weight. The Islanders made the announcement Tuesday.

Analysis: Weight and will be playing his 20th NHL season, and his third the Islanders. Last year, the 39-year-old center had one goal and 16 assists in 36 games before he missed the rest of the season with a shoulder injury that required surgery. The four-time All-Star comes into the season with 276 goals and 748 assists in 1,220 games with the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks and the Islanders.
8/30/2010 Lee Stempniak, RW The Phoenix Coyotes have re-signed Stempniak to a two-year contract that ESPN.com's E.J. Hradek reports is worth a total of $3.8 million.

Analysis: Stempniak had 14 goals and four assists in 18 games with the Coyotes last season after he was traded from Toronto. He scored 28 goals and had 48 points in all last season. In 374 NHL games, Stempniak has 96 goals and 113 assists.
8/30/2010 Tim Kennedy, LW The New York Rangers have agreed to terms with Kennedy on Monday.

Analysis: The 24-year-old had 10 goals and 16 assists last season with Buffalo in 78 games. He also had a goal and two assists in the playoff for the Sabres. Kennedy, who was a rookie last season, was a two-time team scoring leader at Michigan State and won the NCAA title with the Spartans in 2007.
8/28/2010 Clarke MacArthur, LW MacArthur has signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team announced the deal with the unrestricted free agent Saturday.

Analysis: MacArthur had 16 goals and 19 assists last season between the Buffalo Sabres and Atlanta Thrashers, who acquired him on March 3 in exchange for draft picks. He scored a career-best 17 goals in the 2008-09 season while playing in 71 games for the Sabres.
8/27/2010 Nikolai Khabibulin, G Khabibulin has been found guilty on charges stemming from a DUI arrest in February. The decision was handed down Friday, and the four-time All-Star could face up to six months in jail when he is sentenced Tuesday.

Analysis: The 37-year-old played for Phoenix from 1996-99 and still has a home in Paradise Valley. He was pulled over in his Ferrari on Feb. 8, after the car was clocked at 70 mph in a 45 mph zone. Police said an officer smelled alcohol and Khabibulin was arrested after a field sobriety test. Khabibulin, who signed a four-year, $15 million deal with Edmonton last year, hasn't played since Nov. 16 because of a herniated disk in his back that required surgery in January.
8/27/2010 Paul Kariya, LW Kariya will not play next season after being diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome. The decision was announced Friday through a release from his agent.

Analysis: Don Baizley said in a statement that the decision was reached after Kariya was examined by concussion specialist Dr. Mark Lovell. The 35-year-old spent the last three seasons with the St. Louis Blues. He had 18 goals and 25 assists last season. Kariya missed six games last December and January after sustaining a concussion. The two-time Lady Byng Trophy winner has 402 goals and 587 assists in a 15-year career with Anaheim, Colorado, Nashville and St. Louis.
8/27/2010 Ilya Kovalchuk, LW NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly says the New Jersey Devils have submitted a new contract to the league for Kovalchuk.

Analysis: The league has five days to approve or reject the deal, which media reports say amounts to $100 million over 15 years. A month ago, the NHL rejected a 17-year, $102 million contract for Kovalchuk, saying it violated the league salary cap. The 27-year-old Russian left wing has 338 goals and 304 assists in 642 career games. He had 41 goals and 44 assists last season. New Jersey traded him to Atlanta in February.
8/26/2010 Bill Guerin, RW The Penguins won't re-sign Guerin.

Analysis: The 39-year-old Guerin scored 21 goals last season and had four more during the playoffs while often playing on Sidney Crosby's line. He has 429 goals and 427 assists in 1,263 career games with eight teams, starting with New Jersey in the 1991-92 season. Guerin was dealt to Pittsburgh during a trading deadline deal on March 2, 2009. He had 26 goals in 95 regular season games and 11 goals in 35 playoff games, helping Pittsburgh win the Stanley Cup in 2009.
8/26/2010 Nicklas Grossman, D The Stars have agreed to terms with defenseman Nicklas Grossman on a two-year contract worth $3.25 million.

Analysis: The 25-year-old Grossman skated in 71 games for the Stars last season, finishing with seven assists and 32 penalty minutes. In 2008-09, he had career highs in goals (two), assists (10) and points (12). Grossman helped Sweden win the bronze at the 2009 world championships.
8/26/2010 Jordan Staal, C Staal's surgically repaired right foot will be examined by team doctors next week to determine if he will be ready for the start of training camp in September.

Analysis: A tendon in the foot was severed during Game 1 of the Canadiens-Penguins second-round playoff series on April 30 when Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban stepped on it. Staal was expected to be sidelined for weeks, but returned after missing two games - the only games he has missed to injury in his NHL career. Staal has been unable to skate much this summer because of the injury, which required additional surgery in June.
8/24/2010 Patric Hornqvist, RW The Nashville Predators have signed Hornqvist to a three-year, $9.25 million contract. Hornqvist, 23, is Nashville's first draft pick to score 30 goals, and he led the team with his 30 goals last season. That also marked the fourth highest total in franchise history.

Analysis: Hornqvist, from Sollentuna, Sweden, tied the franchise record and tied for second in the NHL with eight game-winning goals. He led the Predators, who announced the deal on Tuesday, with 10 power-play goals and finished tied for the team lead with 51 points off a franchise-record 275 shots in the season. A seventh-round draft pick in 2005, the 5-foot-11, 186-pound forward led Nashville skaters with a plus-18 rating.
8/24/2010 Aaron Ward, D Ward is retiring after more than 13 NHL seasons. The 37-year-old defenseman became a free agent this summer and had knee surgery for the third time. He says he wasn't going to be ready for the upcoming season.

Analysis: Ward split last season with Carolina and Anaheim, recording one goal and 12 assists in 77 games. Ward won Stanley Cups with Detroit in 1997 and 1998 and Carolina in 2006. He also played for Boston and the New York Rangers. He finishes with 44 career goals and 107 assists.
